Make Money: Hubpages and Google AdSense
99So, is hubpages making you money? Have you made money on hubpages? Can you make money on hubpages? Should I write like a billion hubs to make money on hubpages? Or, I think that hubpages will not make me money but I will still think in terms of making money...
These seem to be the most common questions when dealing with new hub writers, they all want to do well and to make money on hubpages, it seems simple really, but it is not. In fact time if a big factor in making your work successful. Links and time seems to be the only reason hubs are successful or not. If you make money in this business you can be pretty certain you are doing something right.
Hubpages is a business and often people seem to expect that they are the exception to the rules that most people take for granted when making money online, or even in any business.
I want to make money... that should be easy right?: Yes it is easy to make money... but not if you don't pay the price. That price is time and energy and COMMITMENT. Yes there is a bit of luck in the beginning, and often now that I have a bit of success here on hubpages I look back to what I once did, and what i have to do now.
When I first began I looked around and decided that my price was sitting and writing the best hubs I could. I also decided that NO MATTER WHAT I would continue to write. So what price did I pay? Time, a lot of it. If I wasn't writing I was learning about linking and marketing hubs.
I was reading how to monetize my hubs for Google. I was learning what my strengths and weaknesses were. This is important for the foundation I wanted to see. Yes, I did have a business plan and I still follow it.
Now I am pleased to say that my price that I pay to keep this thing going is still there but it doesn't involve as much reading and mistakes as it once did. My foundation is there

So.. you've paid a price to make money with Google, but really if it works for you can i copy it?: In a way yes you can copy what I've done, in fact I have told you how I have made money with Google, but really it is personal matter of wanting to pay the price to see success. This is a business and some don't want to pay that price to make money.
Again it is a law of averages at work here, but I believe there is something more, a law of persistence and dedication to a craft that is often very unforgiving to those who simply are here to make money. Hubpages helps you grow your business, and helps you make money, but again there is no easy way to making money any faster than the other guy.
Here are, what I believe, to be the three things needed to make money with Google AdSense and other affiliate programs: Links to your hubs, and interactivity and commenting back, traffic and of course luck. Mostly of all quality content that people can relate to.

Welcome to my hubpages 60 day challenge log, and hat's off to sunforged for thinking this one up. I see everyone is taking a slightly different tack and I think that is a good thing so I am going to lay out...
Fine, that seems easy, but why links? What does that do for me? Links are needed they are the lifeblood to traffic, and if you even know a bit about SEO, you know that links are important, in a hub, in social networking site and on your own blogs and websites. For a quick review this is what I like to do with my own hubs:
1) Write and leave it unpublished so I can look at it a bit more, making sure the message is good. Quality in the content is vital!
2) Publish the hub, then go to share it and begin to add links to the social networking sites there. It is important to do this as links are vital.
3) Next I add a link to a blog of mine or somewhere that works for it, such as a link on an ezine article I have written.
At this point I will have about 5 or 6 links to this particular hub. Of course I usually go one step more. (In fact I do three more things)
4) I try to write an e-zine article based upon the hub, adding a link to the e-zine article. REMINDER: never never "cut and paste" to an e-zine article use your hub for the basis of an article.
5) I make sure that if I am going to have a link on my email for a couple of days, so that people who I email a lot will get that link.
6) I go back to my older hubs and find one that works well with the new hub and ADD a link on that hub to the new one.
Now to do all of this, it normally takes me about 1 hour for each hub I am fixing up, but these are vital. These will get you traffic to your hub. This does not mean money... as yet.

JannyC; another day another question you have for me, so thank you. I am more than happy to help with this one. Google AdSense can be a bit complex, but in many ways when you figure parts of it out, you go...
So I did the links, and I am getting comments what should I do?: Comment back to the comments, now the impression is everything. When you comment back you are telling the person you actually care about what they have written. In fact as they say the commenter is always right.
I often get a few comments saying how bad my hubs are, the big thing here is that these people have their views, and they are welcome to have them. I can see if they have validity ( which often in some way they do) and I also leave these comment ON that hub, unless of course it is listed as spam where there are links to various sites they might have.
Commenting may not make money but it gives the impression you care and are reading and responding back to people. Often if readers return you will find they also bring others, and that is where the money potential comes from.
Above all DO NOT ever unapproved a comment that tells you that they have answered a question that you asked them to answer, but have also made a comment on your hub to either say thanks or whatever. I've seen it before, and it makes people not want to interact with you. it also looks bad on your hub when you see say ten comments looking like a conversation or something but really it is you unapproved question or whatever. Bad practice in my mind.
So repsond to comment, nicely politely and with humor and good grace it will get you more traffic in the end.
Interactivity is a key. Put polls or quizzes in your hubs, This is a way to have traffic do something other than read a hub. It's great to have people come and read, but what about doing something and discussing it?
I have put polls in my hubs since I find this leads to the most comments about what people have voted on and what they think about the votes. Often I notice that this will increase the "value" of time spent on a hub.
Time is a key the longer they are on a hub the more likely there is a chance that the reader will become a "customer" and buy something on your hub. Do not design your hub in such a way that makes people think you want money, but have it so that people know that there is something else for them there.
Also, make the opening space long enough to gain the maximum exposure for google AdSense. I would say about 200 words in three paragraphs gets me that big rectangularbox of Google AdSense ads beside the top bit of writing. Use that to your advantage as well.

See results without votingOne last word-- If you want to make money on hubpages using Google AdSense or other affiliate programs this takes time and fixing up. You need to pay the price.
I still spend about 10 hours or so on each hub I publish trying to make it read-able to others, and I am still working with keywords and writing. I also am still following a business plan that I have of course revised with new ideas and newer outlooks.
Still if you have a plan and are willing to spend a lot of time investing in your business of writing on hubpages to make money, there is no reason you will not succeed. It takes a lot of time, and there are bumps along the way but keep up the good work in linking and other small steps and money will come.

You are correct in the time it takes to write, link and respond to comments. It is time consuming, and that is why I have yet to participate in a 30-day challenge--I could write a hub day (perhaps), but I'm not certain I could establish the links and also respond to comments (as well as read the work of those I follow). I see no other way than to put in the time.

Being realistic is key and yes it is work. If I had ten people helping me; I believe I could make a considerable amount. I have made a little. I have some resources which I feel with a little time and more work will lead to a reasonable amount of money. Your articles is right on cue.

Some of this I understand, like the first few things, but then it becomes a long list and I wonder....what does it mean? How can I do all this? and How can I understand it? Do you have to have to driver and the writer passion? A lot are so mislead in this making money online. A lot think its quick and easy. It is truly hard work and there are some days I wonder why even bother but I like challenges I guess. I am proud of my Google Adsense amount of $11.88. yeah I still got a long way to go but hey this is like a lot to me.

Great info. I like the polls. I had to answer somewhat based on the past. I believe it takes at least 2-years before you can see "good" income. And I believe people should commit to 3 - 5-years if they are serious.
I did hit the $1200/mo figure, but not with just using hubpages. I'm new to hubpages and am looking for diversification of source and links.

I have been in HP for 3 months now and created 12 hubs. Average 1 hub per week which is a slow pace. I spend 50% time on writing and the other 50% on links and interaction. Thanks for the pointers above.. now I know that spending 50% of my time on links and interaction is productive time. Different hubber may have a different %.. do share with us.

DragonDragon-- While I don't know the middle value for hubpages specifically I have read that it is anywhere between 1-4% so that is an estimate of course, something like what most sites have.
Ca Cd Rates-- yes about 2 years of serious dedicated work means money at a steady rate, but honestly 5 years makes teh big difference... all about law of averages here!
Skin Care Beauty-- Often what people will do is ask a question and then as a politeneess will go to the hub writer who has asked it and comment on a hub, with a comment and then write a note saying "I answered your question, But recently a lot of that has been marked as "unapproved" comments, which is essetnially saying to other hubbers that teh time another person took to help wasn't of value, which I think is a bit rude... so i suggest that a comment is a comment and they need to leave it on.
jasonycc-- I usually write about 3 hubs a week, but honestly I have about teh same precentages or more 70% on linking now. As I often will elave a hub unplublished to check back on it for other edits needed.

hey rebecca,it all started 2 years ago..when i recieved an ebook..honest riches by holy mannn..its quite useful,but managed to gain quite few knowledge from it..but its a pity that people are selling those ebook at an exhorbiting prices and they don't even share any concrete info of how to get started,thats why i gave it all up,guess i was depending on that ebook..after a year while browsing online looking at some honest articles by some more experience money makers...i had the courage to start again..but most recently am more inflamed,am joining forums,social network...and i learned quite a lot and sharing my ideas with for free...
what i've learned from all i've been through..is that love for what you do will earn you much more cash than the ambition of just making money online,,i got few cool ideas of how to make free money online...and i wish to start a blog and publish it all for free..helping people that are being victimized by frauds and scams...

I've been dabbling in Adsense for about a year now. I one hand, it is nice to be able to make some money on your own time without having to deal with customer support etc. On the other, it is a long hard road and a lot of work to get good traffic. There is always the risk of Google canceling your account too. Hasn't happened to me, but heard a lot of horror stories.
Gosh, Rebecca...I miss those days when I would be if not THE FIRST to comment then one of the first to comment on your hubs. It always brings a smile to my face whenever you write another hub to help others find their Google AdSense "Way" at HubPages. I've said this before and I'll say it again: You have such a penchant to help others, Rebecca. My hat is off to you.

SEO is important as well, but links are vital, no links no traffic, no money

Hi Rebecca, I like what you write about writing an ezine article to link to the Hub. So often, I've treated my Hubs as articles instead of mini-web sites. I've linked well internally. Some of my Hubs will make $ 2.00 to over $ 3.00 for one click since I write business Hubs. The competition of course is quite strong. I've been thinking of doing a Hub of my business Hubs and then promoting those quite well. I'm going to make almost $30 this month with Adsense . . . almost double . . . and I think with additional promotion I'm aiming for higher targeted traffic and to break $100 in June and going up steadily from there.
Amazon is what puzzles the heck out of me.

Rookie70-- that $100 takes time, but once you have teh links out there you'll find that the traffic will come, whihc means money.... keep at it.
McConnell Group-- yes that is teh general idea, link between like hubs but also go out and link a hub with a blog of yours.
FredIndy-- yes it does take time, but the effort is worth it. As for teh actibity that took time as well, and my older hubs I am still working to make sure they get traffic too.
tonynosense-- Google in terms of being with them has been very good to me, and I am pleased witht eh results I have with them. Of course teh longer you are with them the better it is to check the TOS once and while to make certain that this is still good. To your success.

HipHopHead-- writing about making money in fact does not make money, it is because most of the market is saturated with "how to make money" so there is a lot of time and effort involved in making money by writing about that very topic.

Grills Guy-- there are in fact a number of people who do make a lviing off of hubpages, but I have found that for me I do make a bit of money each day from both my hubs and my blogs, but remember this point: I have been around and doing this for almost a year on hubpages and 2 years with my blogs.

Tsar3000-- some of teh coutnries on google do use Western Union so it is possible, it depends on teh country, now I don't know where you are from but it is worth looking into, as most affiliate do send cheques and other methods than electronically...

Don-- amazon is something of a mystery, but I am slowly getting it as well. Yes teh stronger the competition teh mroe you need to link link and link. otherwise it doesn't matter how good your content is.

Honestly though, I want my writing skills to do most of the work. I'm not sure I want to put in all that work, but maybe (maybe!) if I finally LEARN this all over TIME, it will be easy/easier to me, and not as complex.

schoolgirlforreal-- yes your writing is one of the most valuable things you have, you need to love what you do, still I know writing is one thing it is the marketing that is another, one step at a time and learning as your go... and yes you are right it took me a long time to "get it" and yes there is hope for everyone who wants to do the work.
Christy-- It has really helped my hubs partly because I look them over and expand them as needed and partly for teh links, but never cut and paste a ub as an e-zine base your e-zine on your hub (as in same topic)
Actually writing a hub is the easy part, then finding the right pictures and spreading the word around is the tough one, at least for me. Anyhow the best of our efforts is worthless if ads are not relevant, as it's pretty often the case. :(

hypnodude-- I found that if I go to Google AdSense and go to catergories ti tells me which ads are being placed on my hubs, but not allowing certain catergories I have improved the relevant ads on my hubs...

Rebecca Hi I'm confused I'm real new this and really having trouble understanding all this. I write on Hubpages at least one article a day, but sometimes I don't know what to write so I may not write for a while but I know my score is high and the money I have is high, but what I don't understand is how to get the money I have I tried to go into Google Adsense but I must be doing something wrong for it is always saying still pending and that has been for almost a month. I'm so confused and frustrated for I do not know how to get my money. I have even tried to talk to hubpages, with no answer or help. Any help you can give me would be appreciated, and know I have trouble understanding I looked at your articles on this and just got more confused so maybe in another way you can help me to understand
I agree, Sue, this whole thing is confusing. I'm fairly new and taking it one day at a time. Perhaps Rebecca will tell you, to make sure you are correctly signed up w/ Google and so on. Best of luck!
Sue1226-- First make sure that you have your pasword set up correctly, next io would make sure you have all your info there, ie still pending might mean you didn't fill in something, I would also try to see what is pending. Info not filled in correctly means you will have a hold or something else. Check your emails around that time to see if Google AdSense ( or AdSense team) sent you something.
schoolgirlforreal-- yes password is a must, and so is your PIN number, correct address, your corect publisher ID and that you allow hubpages to send your clics your way. It does take one day at a time and I would also sign up for Inside AdSense, which is their blog.

Great hub! It made me think of the mistakes I made for starters as well. I think I am finally getting the hang of it now and publishing some more hubs slowly but steadily. Reading useful hubs like yours has helped immensely - keep it up!

Actually I make pretty good money at google adsense, but not from hubpages...I create niche blogs on hosting for a specific niche and post for thirty straight days, then after that once a week, but there are several other tricks you must use from internet marketing to get page one of google for the money terms for the niche you want to be in.
Very simple once you learn it, but if anyone is interested i learning how, just contact me and I will be glad to give you some advice. You cannot be lazy and expect to make money though.
